CLEAR WESTERN RED CEDAR
There are many types and grades of cedar. Northern Lights uses only 100% Clear Grade “A” Canadian Western Red Cedar to build our wooden hot tubs – It is the most sought-after type of cedar in the world. While also being the most expensive its qualities simply make for the best hot tub’s in the world.
OTHER CEDARS
Yellow Cedar, Eastern Red Cedar, White Cedar, Spanish Cedar are just some of the species of the class of trees known in english as “Cedar”. However non of these compare to the Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) in terms of building characteristics. Especially when it comes to holding water.
GRADE A CEDAR
As with almost everything, cedar comes in many grades – however, Northern Lights ONLY uses Grade A or #2 or better to build our wooden hot tubs. This grade is simply the best and defined by its absence of any knots as well as a tight ring pattern and long straight grains.
DURABILITY
Knots in wood cause warpage and will result in water leaks over time. Grade “A” Cedar is of the highest grade of cedar and has a tighter ring pattern as it is harvested from older trees. A tight ring pattern will define the durability of the cedar, as well as the water tightness.
AESTHETIC & AROMATIC
Beyond its durability, Western Red Cedar also offers aesthetic and sensory benefits that enhance the hot tub experience. Its rich, warm tones range from light amber to deep reddish-brown, providing a visually appealing, rustic charm. The wood’s natural, pleasant aroma adds to the relaxation experience, creating a spa-like atmosphere. Furthermore, Western Red Cedar is lightweight yet strong, making it easier to work with during manufacturing while still maintaining structural integrity. These combined qualities make it the best choice for crafting high-quality, long-lasting wooden hot tubs.
BUYER BEWARE
Not all wooden tubs are built from the same grade, so be sure to ask when shopping for your new tub. Some competitor’s wooden tubs are even built in China, so buyer beware.
Market Demands of Cedar
Market demands greatly affect the wholesale pricing and availability and price of cedar. As such, cedar has become one of the most sought-after woods internationally, especially in Japan and Europe. The mixed brown, pink and red tones of cedar is prized by architects looking for a clean modern, but unique design. Western red cedar has always been a popular choice for outdoor building projects. Choosing a western red cedar hot tub will surely enhance your back yard and have your neighbours envious.
